One of the most anticipated features of the PlayStation 5, and that unfortunately was not available, is the possibility of expand its SSD storage. After several months of waiting, it seems that the arrival of the aforementioned support is just around the corner. And is that the last Beta of the PS5 firmware already allows you to install SSD units M.2 in the available internal slot.
While you can now connect external units through USB ports, it is not possible Run the PlayStation 5 games, just store them. The reason? These games require ultra-fast storage units whose speeds can only be achieved by the PCIE 4.0 standard. And although the console has a slot to connect the appropriate units (M.2), it is deactivated at the software level.
The next great update of the PlayStation 5 will allow, precisely, use the units SSD M.2 to expand storage. The games of today occupy too much space and the 825 GB of the console are surely short for the vast majority of players. Now, Sony clarifies that the units must meet a series of features to run correctly. It is important that you keep in mind before opening the portfolio.
First, the SSD must have a minimum reading speed of 5,500 MB / s. Any higher figure is compatible. Likewise, it is mandatory that it is an M.2 and PCIE 4.0 unit. Sony points out that using an SSD M.2 in the PlayStation 5 involves making sure that there is an "effective heat dissipation", so it recommends accompanying the unit with its own heat sink (Heatsink). It should be mentioned that many market proposals already include this cooling structure.
In terms of capacity, PS5 may accept SSD M.2 of between 250 GB and 4 TB. Do not have doubts that during the next few weeks we will see many storage units manufacturers offering their M.2 solutions for the PlayStation 5. However, you can now find some products that are aligned at Sony's requirements, such as Samsung 980 Pro or the Western Digital 850. The second one incorporates a heat sink.
